From
The Minstrel Mask
As a final project for Music History from 1750
- Present I wrote this paper in response to
the book Where Dead Voices Gather by
Nick Tosches. The paper discusses the phenomenon
of the American minstrel show and its performers
and traces the unique influence of minstrel
music all the way through contemporary artists
such as Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Lucinda Williams.

the mozambique originally played by Wilco's Glenn
Kotche. |
Dante
Aligheri & The Age of Humanism
This extensive research paper was written for
the course Music History from Antiquity to 1750
at Indiana University. The paper discusses literary
movements during the 14th century as related to
madrigal settings of Dante's verses as well as
the meanings and implications of these rare settings.
Very little scholarship exists on this topic and
it was my most difficult research paper to date. |

Evolcaytion
Co-written
by Jesse and friend and fellow drummer Bill Leather,
Evolcaytion (Evolution & Decay) is a piece
based on the dueling drummers concept but with
a crazy twist! Instead of staying seated, the
piece utilizes 5 duplicate stations and the players
move around the room accordingly. After playing
the entire piece, the players then play it backwards
before moving to the ending. Click here
to listen to the piece. |

Drummer Reports
For their final exam, I had my students at Indiana
University compile a biography and discography
on a drummer of their choice. They also had to
transcribe something by that drummer. Everyone
from jazz great Vernel Fournier to metal master
Danny Carey is covered. Enjoy! |
Right

the Mande people of West Africa and the social
constructs that surround it. Relavant to the
unit is my transcription (taken by ear) of a
field recording from West Africa:
